What is Bloomsday?

Bloomsday is a vibrant annual celebration of the life and work of the iconic Irish writer James Joyce, observed with great enthusiasm every June 16th. This day is a tribute to Leopold Bloom, the unforgettable protagonist of Joyce's monumental novel, "Ulysses," which meticulously details his journey through Dublin on a single, pivotal day: June 16, 1904.

How is it celebrated?

Join fellow literary enthusiasts in immersing yourself in the world of "Ulysses"! Celebrations often involve participants donning period-appropriate Edwardian attire, reminiscent of the characters from the novel. The day is rich with public readings, dramatic performances, and guided tours to various Dublin landmarks immortalized in the book. Oíche Shamhna (Halloween) Ceili 🎃
Date to be determined - October, 2026
+

What is Oíche Shamhna?

Oíche Shamhna (pronounced "ee-ha how-na") is the Irish name for Halloween, marking the eve of the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. This festival celebrated the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, or the "darker half" of the year. It was a time of great significance in the Celtic world, representing the new year.

Origins & Traditions:

A core belief of Samhain is that the veil between our world and the Otherworld becomes thin, allowing spirits to pass through. Ancient traditions included lighting large communal bonfires for protection, wearing costumes and masks to disguise oneself from spirits, and honoring ancestors. The modern customs of Halloween are deeply rooted in these ancient Irish practices.

Our Celebration:

Location: Muggivan's School of Irish Dance Studio

Details: Help us attempt what may be the first ever Samhain festival to be held in New Orleans. Get ready for an evening of spooky fun with costumes, lively music, traditional dance, delicious food, and refreshing drinks. We're even hoping for a bonfire, weather and permits permitting!
