Choose Your Character
You're about to step into Dublin, 1922. The Civil War is raging. The Boyles have their own troubles — but you've got yours. The richer your character, the more alive the scene becomes.
Think Irish, 1920s. First name, surname. Who are you on this landing?
Go deep. What do you do for a living? Docker, seamstress, charwoman, ex-soldier? Where are you from — a farm in Kerry, a lane in the Liberties? Who have you lost? What keeps you up at night? The more real you make this person, the more the Boyles will notice you.
This is why you're knocking on the Boyles' door. Make it desperate, make it human. Money trouble? A secret? Someone threatening you? A letter you can't read? Think 1920s Dublin — poverty, politics, love, betrayal, the Church, the IRA. The wilder the problem, the better the scene.
You stand outside the Boyle family flat on the landing.
You take a breath and raise your hand.
Juno and the Paycock was first performed at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, 1924.
